- HIT: Carousel has a home at Eldridge Elmira City Council
members should be proud of themselves after they voted Monday night
to back the volunteers of the Eldridge Park Carousel Preservation
Society in their untiring efforts to bring back a piece of local
history.
Officially, City Hall gave the volunteers a license to install
and operate its classic carousel at city-owned property at Eldridge
Park. The decision is important in our mind, too, because it
presents a vote of confidence in what the volunteers have done to
duplicate the horses, other animals and machinery that were sadly
sold in 1989.
The decision by city lawmakers adds authenticity to the work
being performed by Dr. Robert Lyon and his team of volunteers.
Backing by City Hall should not only help to inspire the volunteers,
it should help the society in its continuing fund-raising efforts.
Society members hope to have the carousel completely restored by
2005, a target date we hope is successful.
